Travel and Photography: Are We Missing the Essential by Constantly Seeing Through Our Camera Lens?

Travel and photography often go hand in hand. Faced with a new place, we want to keep something of its light and its strangeness. The risk is well known: looking so hard through the viewfinder that we forget to be there.
The hunt for the perfect frame can quietly replace the experience itself. It can also stand between us and the people, the streets, the pace of a place.
One way through is simple: set hours for the camera, then put it away. Another is to let photography serve the journey rather than swallow it — using the lens to notice, not to hide behind. The right balance is personal. Travel is there to widen the eye; photography, at its best, keeps that widening from fading.
